Papers Please FAQ

What's the setup?
The communist state of Arstotzka has ended a 6-year war with neighboring Kolechia and reclaimed its rightful half of the border town, Grestin.

Your job as immigration inspector is to control the flow of people entering the Arstotzkan side of Grestin from Kolechia. Among the throngs of immigrants and visitors looking for work are hidden smugglers, spies, and terrorists. Using only the documents provided by travelers and the Ministry of Admission's primitive inspect, search, and fingerprint systems you must decide who can enter Arstotzka and who will be turned away or arrested.
Is there nudity and/or violence?
The game has both pixel-art nudity, which can be disabled from the options, and pixel-art violence, which cannot.
How long is the game?
Story mode takes at least 4 hours to reach one of the main endings. The game is divided into days and there are 31 days in all. Retrying days or getting multiple endings takes longer.
How many endings are there?
There are 20 different endings. Some are small variations of others. 8 of the endings are attained by completing the entire game in different ways.
What determines which ending I'll get?
Endings are based on the decisions you make each day. The amount of money earned has an influence on several of the endings.
Is the game completely scripted?
Story mode is mostly scripted. A separate procedurally-generated "endless" mode is unlocked after reaching a certain ending in story mode.
What is endless mode?
Endless mode allows you to play one of three game-types with an endless flow of procedurally-generated travelers: Timed, Perfection, or Endurance. Each game-type has a different scoring system. You can also choose from 4 different rulesets for any game-type. A ruleset determines which border checkpoint rules are in effect and which documents are required for travelers.
Can endless mode be unlocked without completing story mode?
Yes. Endless mode is initially locked using a simple 5-digit code that's shared among all copies. Check the internet for someone who's already gotten the required ending and posted the code.
Does the Steam version have any special features?
The Steam version supports achievements, stats, and cloud saves. Endless mode uses Steam leaderboards for rankings.
What languages does the game support?
The game is English-only at the moment. Localizing a pixel-art game with lots of custom text layouts isn't easy but I have plans to work on translations in the near future.
Is the free beta version available?
Yes!. Grab it from dukope.com.
Does the retail version support mods like the beta?
No. The beta had very crude mod support and left many things uneditable. I didn't have the time or bandwidth to expand this to a full modding system. If there's demand for it, I'll add full mod support in a later update. The beta will remain available at dukope.com for playing any mods created for it.
Will there be a Linux version?
I'm hopeful to get a Linux version out but there's no timeline for it.
Will there be an iOS/Android version?
Maybe. I'm focusing on the desktop versions now though so it's not a high priority. I doubt there will ever be a phone port of the game; the most I'm hoping for is tablets.
I submitted my name during the beta, will it be in the final game?
Sometime after release, the original emailed link that you used to submit your name will be reactivated. Re-visiting this link will tell you if your name was included in the final game.
Can I monetize Let's Play videos of this game on YouTube/Twitch/elsewhere?
Yes! You're free to monetize your own videos that play, reference, or review the game. If the video isn't about or doesn't reference "Papers, Please", you are not permitted to use the theme song or other media from the game.
Can I post a copy of the trailer (or any other official media) to my YouTube/other video channel?
No. If you'd like to promote the game, please link to the homepage here or to the official videos on YouTube.
Glory to what?
